22 Year Old University Student Takes his Own Life After Losing Ksh 15,000 School Fees to Betting Scheme

NAIROBI, Kenya, March 28 – A tragic incident occurred in Raila village, Langata constituency, where a university student took his own life on Wednesday.

Brian Ongwae, aged 22 and a student at the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA), tragically lost his school fees to a betting scheme.

Ongwae had placed a bet amounting to Ksh. 15,000, which was intended to cover his tuition fees, hoping to make a profit. Unfortunately, the bet did not yield the desired outcome, leaving him in despair.

According to residents, following the unsuccessful betting attempt on Tuesday evening, Ongwae appeared distressed throughout the day. Eventually, he secluded himself in his house, where neighbors could hear him speaking to an unidentified individual.

Concerned neighbors visited Ongwae’s rented house later in the day, only to discover his lifeless body hanging from the rooftop.

George Mukuria, the area chief of Muguimoini, reported that police officers arrived at the scene on Wednesday evening to assess the situation. Subsequently, the body was taken to the City Mortuary for an autopsy.

Before taking his own life, Ongwae left a note addressed to his mother, urging her to stay strong.

Chief Mukuria suggested that Ongwae may have been battling depression due to consistent losses in betting. He appealed to young people to refrain from participating in such activities to prevent similar tragedies.
