NAIROBI, Kenya, April 26-Kenya’s Ministry of Education is preparing schools for the April 29 term start amidst heavy rains.

With floods hitting many areas, schools’ readiness is uncertain pending damage assessments. Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu directed regional education directors to assess flood impacts, crucial for deciding on school reopening.

Reports show severe damage to schools in heavily affected regions. Evaluations will consider building safety and facility functionality. Detailed data on flood effects will guide planning efforts.

“The data on the effects of the rains and flooding will be crucial for planning and for sharing with the Education in Emergencies cluster working group,” stated the memo.

The Kenya Meteorological Department predicts continued heavy rainfall until at least April 29, posing risks of flooding and landslides in various regions.

The forecast specifically anticipates significant rainfall in regions such as the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of Nairobi County.

Parents and guardians are advised to follow official updates as the ministry evaluates the situation.
