CS Murkomen Introduces Special Green Number Plates for Electric Vehicles and Motorvehicles

NAIROBI, Kenya, March 27- Transport Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, has introduced proposals for green-colored registration plates designated specifically for owners of electric vehicles (EVs) and electric motorcycles.

This announcement was made during the introduction of the e-mobility policy at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on March 27.

Murkomen underscored that these green registration plates would serve to easily distinguish electric vehicles and motorcycles on the roads.

Furthermore, he indicated that current owners with registration plates of varying shades of green would be required to apply for the new ones.

Historically, green plates have been utilized by vehicles belonging to county enforcement officers, commonly known as “kanjos.”

The objective of this initiative is to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles in Kenya.

Murkomen outlined plans for additional incentives to promote the use of environmentally friendly technology, including discussions with governors to prioritize more affordable parking options for electric vehicles.

The Cabinet Secretary confirmed that the implementation of the green registration plates would commence once all requisite paperwork was formally endorsed.

He also discussed intentions to install charging infrastructure at the ministry headquarters to lead the way in the adoption of electric vehicles.

This infrastructure may potentially expand to other government ministries in the future.
