NAIROBI, Kenya, January 24 – The County Government of Mombasa is actively combatting a surge in Conjunctivitis cases, commonly referred to as red eye, and is urging residents to prioritize hygiene practices to curb the spread of the ailment.

The County Department of Health Services released a statement highlighting the increasing incidence of Conjunctivitis caused by viruses, bacteria, allergens, or irritants, not only within Mombasa but also in neighboring Tanzania.

Conjunctivitis, characterized by symptoms such as eye pain, swelling, redness, itchiness, and eye discharge, has become a growing concern in the region. In response to this health challenge, authorities are strongly recommending that citizens adopt rigorous hygiene measures.

These measures include practicing frequent handwashing with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds, refraining from touching or rubbing the eyes and face, and avoiding the sharing of personal items such as towels, pillowcases, eye drops, or makeup.

The advisory underscores the contagious nature of Conjunctivitis, emphasizing the importance of covering the nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing, proper disposal of tissues, regular disinfection of surfaces frequently touched, and wearing sunglasses to alleviate further eye irritation.

Residents exhibiting symptoms such as redness, itching, blurred vision, or eye discharge are urged to seek immediate medical attention.
