NAIROBI, Kenya, April 24- Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has urged the national government to step in and address the flooding crisis in Nairobi, which has been exacerbated by persistent heavy rains.

“The situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels. The County Government for all its efforts is overwhelmed,” Sifuna said.

“We need all national emergency services mobilised to save lives.”

The floods have caused widespread disruption, impacting both vehicular and pedestrian movement across the city.

Informal settlements have borne the brunt of the flooding, leading to the displacement of hundreds of residents. The Kenya Red Cross reported flash floods in various estates, with areas like Mukuru, Mathare, and Huruma being severely affected. Additionally, the overflowing Athi River has worsened the situation, resulting in road and bridge closures and heavy traffic congestion.

The Red Cross has deployed a team to assess the affected areas and conduct search and rescue operations as necessary. They have already rescued 18 people stranded in Mathare 4A due to floodwaters.

Meanwhile, the Kenya National Highways Authority has issued warnings about impassable sections of Thika Superhighway and disruptions on Mombasa Road caused by the heavy rains. They advise caution to all commuters.
