Millions Jepchirchir and Mutiso Walk Away with Following their Wins at the London Marathon

NAIROBI, Kenya, April 20- Kenyan runners Peres Jepchirchir and Alexander Mutiso are poised to earn significant sums of money following their triumphs at the London Marathon.

Jepchirchir clinched victory in the women’s race, setting a world-record time of two hours, sixteen minutes, and sixteen seconds in the process.

Tigst Assefa, the current world record holder, Megertu Alemu of Ethiopia, and Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei also surpassed the previous women’s only record of 2:17:01, established by Mary Keitany in 2017.

In the men’s event, Mutiso outpaced the legendary Kenenisa Bekele to secure victory with a time of 2:04:01. British runners Emile Cairess and Mahamed Mahamed finished third and fourth, respectively.

Cairess’s time of 2:06:46 ranks him as the second-fastest British man ever over the marathon distance and the first British athlete to finish on the podium since Mo Farah in 2018.

The prize money for the elite race at the 2024 London Marathon is capped at 7,342,500 shillings for the gold medalist, ensuring both Jepchirchir and Mutiso will receive this amount.

Additionally, Jepchirchir will earn an extra 16.7 million shillings for breaking the record. Furthermore, as per President William Ruto’s directive, she will receive 5 million shillings from the Kenyan government for setting a new world record.

The runners-up in the elite race will earn 4,005,000 shillings, while the bronze medalist will take home 3,003,750 shillings.
