NAIROBI, Kenya, February 28 – Naivasha residents witnessed an unusual incident when two men were discovered engaging in intimate behavior at a local bar.

Chaos rose as angry bystanders attacked them, resulting in severe injuries to one of them before others intervened to help.

The commotion began when the pair, enjoying drinks on a Tuesday evening, began displaying affection towards each other, much to the shock and displeasure of onlookers.

Witness Paul Mwaura recounted how the situation escalated as the two men continued their behavior, eventually prompting one of them to attempt further intimate actions, leading to public intervention.

“The two who were drunk and decided to make out and irate members of the public threw them out of the bar before seriously beating them,” he said.

“One of the suspects is married and residents are still trying to come to terms with the incidents which incidentally have shot up,” he added.

The incident highlighted a recent increase in LGBTQ couples in the town, with some utilizing Airbnb accommodations.

Although the matter was not formally reported to the authorities, it sheds light on ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals in Kenya, where cases of assault and even murder based on sexual orientation have tragically occurred, such as the recent case of Sheila Adhiambo Lumumba, a non-binary lesbian who was brutally attacked and killed in April 2022.
