NAIROBI, Kenya, February 27- New details have emerged regarding how John Matara, the primary suspect in the murder case of Scarlet Wahu, came to encounter her.

According to information from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Matara allegedly connected with the victim through an online dating platform named “Bed Escorts” on January 1, 2024.

Their first physical meeting took place at a short-term rental apartment in South B, Nairobi, just two days later, where the tragic incident unfolded.

This revelation surfaced in an affidavit submitted by the DCI, opposing Matara’s plea for bail and bond terms.

Sergeant Alex Chokera from the Makadara DCI offices detailed that Wahu visited the apartment on January 3, 2024, around 7 pm, and Matara greeted her upon arrival.

Later that evening, at approximately 9 pm, Matara was spotted leaving the apartment premises wearing trousers stained with blood and a towel draped around his neck.

Suspicions arose among the security personnel witnessing Matara’s unusual behavior, prompting a review of the CCTV footage by the apartment owner. Upon inspection, they tragically discovered Scarlet Wahu’s lifeless body inside the apartment.

Sgt. Chokera expressed concerns for the safety of the apartment owner, who had direct contact with Matara and shared personal details with him.

The affidavit highlighted the potential risk of Matara utilizing the apartment owner’s contact information to intimidate or manipulate her.

Additionally, the affidavit unveiled a history of complaints against Matara from various women at different police stations. Allegedly, he would lure women to AirBnBs, commit criminal acts, and flee the scene. Reported offenses include rape, indecent behavior, threats, extortion, and assault, with complaints stemming from locations such as Thika and Nairobi CBD.

Following the incident, Matara, under the alias Fredrick Opondo, sought medical attention at South B Hospital, citing injuries from a supposed altercation with thieves.

In his plea for bail and bond, Matara affirmed his willingness to adhere to court directives and refuted accusations of tampering with witnesses.

The court postponed the proceedings to March 18, granting Matara’s attorney, Samuel Ayora, additional time to prepare in response to the prosecution’s delayed submission of opposing arguments.
