NAIROBI, Kenya, February 15- The Makadara Law Court has granted freedom to two Nigerian citizens who were previously detained in connection with the tragic death of Rita Waeni, a student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

William Ovie Opia and Johnbull Asbour had been held by the police since January 22, 2024. Initially, the court had permitted the police to keep them in custody to facilitate ongoing investigations.

However, Magistrate Agnes Mwangi, upon releasing the suspects, stipulated that they must report to investigators once a week.

The prosecution informed the court that investigations are still in progress. Waeni’s body was discovered on January 14, 2024, in a temporary lodging facility in the Roysambu area of Nairobi.

Tragically, her body had been mutilated, with her head missing. Subsequently, her head was discovered at a dam in Kiambu County on January 21.

Waeni was laid to rest in a private ceremony on February 5, 2024.
