Written by on 14 July 2023

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 14- The Azimio la Umoja Party coalition has recently made an announcement regarding a revision of dates for their planned demonstrations.

In a statement released on July 14, Azimio explained that the purpose of the revision was to accommodate the proposal of having anti-government protests conducted three days a week.

Furthermore, the party stated that they had received numerous requests from the public, urging them to intensify the demonstrations.

“In addition to the previous communication issued yesterday regarding the Third Wave of peaceful protests, set to commence next week on Wednesday, the Coalition has been overwhelmed by requests from various sectors of the Kenyan public to escalate these demonstrations. Consequently, we are pleased to announce a revision of the calendar,” the statement partially read.

According to Azimio, the initially scheduled protests for Wednesday, July 19, would still take place, and two additional dates have been added.

“Moving forward, the peaceful protests will now be conducted on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of the upcoming week, as per the public’s request for a three-day duration,” the statement concluded.

Over the past week, anti-government protests have erupted, as citizens have taken to the streets to voice their opposition against escalating taxes and the exorbitant cost of living.

These demonstrations have been met with a significant presence of law enforcement officers, resulting in violent clashes between protesters and the police. Tragically, at least six individuals have lost their lives, and numerous others have sustained injuries.

Despite the ban on protests imposed by Police IG Japhet Koome, demonstrators have persistently gathered in various towns across the nation.

These protests serve as a manifestation of the mounting frustration among Kenyans regarding the soaring cost of living and the government’s handling of the economy.
