NAIROBI, Kenya, July 7- In the heart of Nairobi, Kenya, teargas filled the air on Friday as police took action to disband the Saba Saba protestors within the Central Business District (CBD).

Initially, authorities had granted a permit exclusively to the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition, allowing them to host a rally at the Kamukunji grounds. According to Adamson Bungei, the Nairobi Police Chief, the organizers had received permission to convene their gathering at Kamkunji Grounds.

However, Bungei made it clear that street demonstrations and property destruction would not be tolerated.

“While they are free to proceed with their meeting at Kamkunji Grounds, street protests are strictly prohibited,” he asserted.

The Azimio La Umoja Coalition, in conjunction with several civil society groups, had called for protests on July 7, commemorating Saba Saba Day. This day carries historical significance, symbolizing the pursuit of a multiparty system in Kenya.

As the day unfolded, Nairobi woke up to heavy rainfall accompanied by a heightened police presence. In anticipation of the anticipated street protests, law enforcement established roadblocks around State House and various other parts of the city.
