Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Forgives Accusers After Terrorism Charges Dropped

Written by on 12 June 2024

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 12- Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko announced on Wednesday that he has forgiven those who accused him of terrorism charges.

Expressing his relief at being cleared of the charges, Sonko shared his satisfaction with the verdict.

Speaking to the press outside Kahawa Law Court, he stated that the accusations were politically motivated and that he harbored no ill will towards his accusers.

“I have always been innocent; the charges were politically driven. During my time as Governor, I was even invited to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. How could I have been associated with terrorism?” Sonko remarked.

He added that his co-accused suffered due to their connection with him politically, though they were merely county government employees and not politicians.

Sonko emphasized that no one should face terrorism charges because of their political ties.

Despite their ordeal, Sonko and his lawyers have decided not to sue the state for damages.

The charges, which they had denied since 2021, were officially dropped on Wednesday following a request from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
