NAIROBI, Kenya, February 9 – Joseph Irungu, also known as Jowie, has been convicted for the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani in September 2018.

Justice Grace Nzioka stated that Jowie stole an ID two days prior to the incident, armed himself with a gun, dressed in a kanzu over his clothes, gained entry to the deceased’s apartment, and proceeded to kill Monica Kimani.

“He left the premises, changed his attire, and later returned home to burn the clothes he wore during the commission of the crime,” Justice Nzioka remarked.

“After reviewing the evidence presented in this case, this court finds that the prosecution has provided sufficient evidence and has met the required standard… This court concludes that the first accused person is responsible for the murder of the deceased,” ruled Justice Grace Nzioka.

Former TV news anchor Jacque Maribe, who was co-accused with Irungu, has been acquitted of the murder charge.

Regarding Maribe, Justice Nzioka stated: “In my opinion, the charge brought against the second accused person (Jacque Maribe) was inappropriate.”

The trial of the two individuals began in 2018, during which the prosecution presented 35 witnesses. The defense did not call any witnesses.

Kimani’s body was discovered in a bathtub with her throat slashed. Her hands and feet were bound behind her back, and her mouth was taped shut. Police indicated that the murder would have likely required more than one perpetrator to execute.

Nzioka emphasized that the prosecution has successfully demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt that Irungu committed the murder of Kimani.

“The death occurred, the cause of death was established, and the first accused committed the offense. It was not a case of accidental death but a deliberate act. I hereby find Jowie guilty as charged of the offense of murder,” she concluded.
