President Ruto Temporarily Relocates from Nairobi State House for 2 Months as it Undergoes Renovation

Written by on 12 January 2024

NAIROBI, Kenya, January 12- President William Ruto is set to vacate the 117-year-old State House in Nairobi for a two-month period to facilitate renovation activities.

Architects had flagged certain sections of the historic colonial building as unsuitable for habitation, recommending the construction of a new structure.

Despite the closure of State House in Nairobi, President Ruto has continued his duties from alternative bases, including State House Nakuru and Eldoret State Lodge, with occasional operations from his Sugoi home in Uasin Gishu County.

However, sources within State House revealed that the President rejected the proposal for a new residence, citing a projected cost exceeding Sh2 billion. Despite concerns about the existing conditions, President Ruto insisted on renovations, emphasizing the financial constraints of allocating such a substantial amount at the moment.

In November 2022, two months after the President’s inauguration, the Budget and Appropriations Committee, led by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, presented a supplementary budget to Parliament, allocating Sh2.6 billion and Sh9.9 billion for increased renovations at State House.

The decision was influenced by the President’s scrutiny of exorbitant expenses incurred for tent usage on the State House lawns, which he deemed unacceptable.

As part of the ongoing renovations, a new presidential pavilion capable of accommodating 1,000 to 1,500 people has been constructed. This pavilion includes offices for hosting smaller meetings with visiting dignitaries.

Specific renovations commenced immediately after Christmas, focusing on reinforcing walls, pillars, and sections of the roof without altering the building’s structure or form.

The renovation process has temporarily transformed President Ruto into a nomad, necessitating his movement between various State Houses and State Lodges across the country. The President’s decision to relocate is influenced by the practicality of reaching his next assignment efficiently.
