Woman Dies By Suicide After Unsuccessfully Applying for More Than 500 Jobs

NAIROBI, Kenya, January 11- The apparent suicide of a 27-year-old woman has been reported, with her body discovered hanging in the bathroom of her parents’ home in Umiru village, Siaya County.
The woman’s mother, Herine Okoth, made the grim discovery at approximately 6:30 in the morning and promptly sought assistance. According to Cleti Kimaiyo, Siaya County Police Commander, the mother initially went to wake her daughter but found her absent from her room. Upon checking the neighboring bathroom, she found the woman’s lifeless body hanging by a rope around her neck.
Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the deceased had expressed concerns to her mother the night before about her job prospects, having applied for over 500 positions without success. The woman, identified as Vera Omondi Okoth, graduated from Masinde Muliro University in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in science.
Kimaiyo, confirming the incident, noted that the deceased left no suicide note and simply placed all her certificates on her bed. The body has been taken to the Yala Sub-County Hospital mortuary for further examination through an autopsy, while the case remains under investigation.
